Croatia Coast: My favorite warm weather destination

Croatia: A Coastal Dreamscape
Croatia is one of those places that feels like it was crafted for a movie set. The vibrant colors and timeless architecture of its coastal cities make you feel like you’ve stepped into a dream. It’s like a blend of the best parts of the Italian Riviera and the Greek islands, combining a relaxed coastal lifestyle with bustling streets and postcard-perfect views. Whether you’re wandering through historic towns or soaking in the scenery along the Adriatic, Croatia has a way of captivating you at every turn.

Starting in Split
Our journey began in Split, a city that feels as if it was pulled straight from the pages of a medieval fairytale. Its local town is built within the walls of Diocletian’s Palace—a sprawling, ancient Roman fortress-turned-village. Walking through this converted castle is like stepping back in time, but with the added charm of modern shops, cafés, and restaurants seamlessly woven into the stone walls.

Split is an incredibly walkable city, and I recommend dedicating a full day to exploring the castle area. Allow yourself to get lost in its maze of narrow alleyways, hidden courtyards, and winding paths—you’ll stumble upon charming spots at every turn. For dinner, head to the Split Riva boardwalk. This lively promenade lines the harbor and offers stunning views of the sea, making it the perfect spot for a sunset meal. With the twinkling lights of docked boats and the sound of waves in the background, it’s an experience that feels quintessentially Croatian.

If you’re planning a trip to Croatia, Split is the ideal starting point. Its manageable size allows you to ease into your travels, making it perfect for shaking off any jet lag before diving into the more iconic destinations. Plus, its central location on the coast makes it an excellent launchpad for exploring nearby islands and cities. Ferries run regularly from Split to various coastal gems, so it’s easy to plan day trips or hop between destinations.

From Split to Korčula: A Journey Through Coastal Beauty

After soaking in the charm of Split, we hopped on a ferry to Korčula, a ride that took about three hours. It’s the perfect time to catch up on some lost sleep or simply enjoy the breathtaking views of Croatia’s untouched coastline and islands. The ferry makes a few stops along the way, including one at Hvar, which immediately stood out as a hotspot for the younger crowd. As swarms of college students and recent grads disembarked, you could feel the energy shift—it’s no surprise Hvar is home to some of the liveliest clubs in Croatia, second only to Dubrovnik.

When we arrived in Korčula, it felt like we had stepped into a different world. This tiny castle-like city sits on a peninsula surrounded by sparkling blue waters, offering a more laid-back and mellow vibe compared to the buzz of Split or Hvar. Korčula quickly became my favorite stop of the trip, and it’s easy to see why.

Sunset Dining and Local Specialties

One of the highlights of Korčula is its incredible dining scene. The city boasts several higher-end restaurants, many of which are perched right along the water’s edge, offering unbeatable views of the sunset. Trust me when I say, there’s nothing quite like enjoying a fresh seafood dinner as the sky turns shades of pink and orange over the Adriatic. Croatia’s seafood is a must-try—some of the best I’ve ever had. While other dishes weren’t particularly memorable, the fish more than makes up for it.

Exploring Beyond the Peninsula
Korčula isn’t just about its main town. We took local water taxis to nearby villages, each with its own unique charm. These quick trips are an excellent way to experience different vibes—whether you’re lounging on a beach, sipping cocktails, or splashing around in a water park built into the sea. Also some great places to throw some back flips if that interests you at all.

Coastal Adventures by Moped

Our second day in Korčula was an adventure straight out of a movie. We rented mopeds for about 40 euros a day and rode along winding coastal roads, stopping in tiny villages where you’ll find little more than a single restaurant and a grocery store. The ride itself was an unforgettable experience, with stunning ocean views and a sense of freedom you just can’t beat.

After about 45 minutes of riding, we reached a dead end where we parked the mopeds and hiked down to a hidden beach. This secluded white-rock cove was like something out of a dream, with crystal-clear water so inviting it felt like your own private paradise. It’s moments like these that make Croatia feel truly magical.

From Korčula to Dubrovnik: The Grand Finale
Our last stop was Dubrovnik, a city bursting with energy and perfect for a faster-paced group. Known for its preserved medieval architecture, Dubrovnik’s old town feels like walking through history. Its sprawling size and wealth of attractions mean you’ll want to spend at least 2–3 days here to truly take it all in.

Dubrovnik caters to all ages and interests, but for a younger crowd, the city offers some incredible spots to hang out during both the day and night. My absolute favorite was Buža Bar, a cliffside watering hole just outside the city walls. This unique bar doubles as a cliff-jumping spot, with jumps ranging in height for thrill-seekers of all levels. I could’ve easily spent multiple days lounging there, sipping drinks, and diving into the sparkling Adriatic.

Inside the city walls, the restaurants are equally impressive. Many offer amazing views of the bustling squares, where the lively atmosphere adds to the dining experience. For a special occasion or a splurge-worthy meal, Gradska Kavana Arsenal Restaurant is the place to go. While we couldn’t secure a reservation, it’s undoubtedly one of Dubrovnik’s most iconic spots for a memorable dinner.

Dubrovnik’s nightlife also seemed to be a highlight, with a vibrant scene for anyone looking to keep the energy going after sunset. If you’re a cocktail fan, don’t leave without trying a Dubrovnik Moscow Mule—it was my favorite drink of the trip!

Reflections on Croatia
This trip was nothing short of breathtaking, and I know I’ll be returning to Croatia in the near future. From the history-rich streets of Dubrovnik to the laid-back charm of Korčula and the vibrant energy of Split, Croatia has a little something for everyone. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a bit of both, this coastal gem won’t disappoint.
